What are the typical codes and convention of
film trailers – what information is usually provided?
1. The typical codes and conventions of film trailers usually tell the story of
what the film is about in a speedy condensed fashion. The trailers are usually edited to make the audience feel engaged and excited about the
coming film, to do this they use fast
cuts and texts to make the audience aware of what is going on,
also they use this to create an enigma
code so it leave the target market
wondering what is happening or what is going to happen which makes them more
anxious to go see the film. Trailers are usually a three part structure the beginning which lays out the key element of the story, the
middle part of the trailer which tells us a bit more about the narrative, then towards the end of the trailer it reaches a climax which is a visual montage of edits which is usually followed by a piece of music and text.
How are trailers distributed?
2. The trailers are known to be generally distributed
by the same studios that produced
them. I.e. Revolver Entertainment distributed
the trailers. Whereas a big budget
Hollywood film would have someone who is more known for example Harry Potter
the film and trailers are distributed by Warner Bros.
How does ILL Manors use trailer conventions?
3. ILL Manors uses trailer conventions through
the voice over in the trailer which is Plan B as it creates a story line of what
is happening in connection with the images that are shown along with the
dialogue in the trailer.
Who is the target audience? Does it have a
unique selling point or use of particular techniques to appeal to the audience?
Consider the way the scenes are edited together – does the trailer give away
any clues about the narrative? Are the main stars visual in the trailer? Is
their information about the director of the film? Is there information about
the release date? Is a narratives voice-over used?
4. I think the target audience for ILL Manors is
aimed at young adults/ teenagers from the ages between 18-30 year olds as the film
contains violence, drugs use and sexual contents which is appropriate for those
over 18. However, I do believe that 15+ would also watch such as 16-17 year
olds as they may be able to relate to certain parts of the narrative in the
film especially those who come from a lone parent family or those who lived in
estates growing up. I think this film is aimed more at men but also an girls as
in the film it shows all men who are the drug dealers as it is a dangerous
thing to get caught up in. But it also appeals to young women as they may be
fans of Plan B which may determine them to watch the movie. Plan B the director
of the film wants to show people the typical stereotypes of young males/females.
However, he wants to get across to people why they can be stuck in that life
and how they get caught up in it from a young age, showing how hard it is for
them to escape that life once their caught up in it. The title ILL Manors and
release date is shown towards the end of the trailer as it is a vital piece of
the trailer in order for the audience to remember when its out which promotes the
film but also the name of the film.
